Government and public sector jobs make up a large part of the local economy, especially Joint Base Andrews, the University of Maryland, the Internal Revenue Service, the Census Bureau, and the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Short Description of the Area: Prince George's County is southeast of Washington DC, in the Western Shore Uplands region of the state, between Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Overall the county has low rolling hills and outside of the inner beltway area is a mix of wooded and cultivated lands. Prince George's County is one of the more historic counties in the US, having a history going back to 1696, was a minor theater in the War of Independence, and the War of 1812, (British troops marched through on their way to the Battle of Baltimore), and had a minor role guarding Washington DC from Confederate invasion in the Civil War. In the 20th Century, the county gained a majority African-American population.

Climate and Weather: Prince George's County is a little rainy and has snowy winters but is about as sunny as anywhere. Summers tend to be fairly humid for Maryland and temps can reach the high 80s to 90s (degrees F).

The county has an active religious life, including over 800 churches, and a smaller number of mosques, synagogues, and Hindu and Buddhist temples.

Prince George's County is named for George, Prince of Denmark, who was the husband of Queen Anne of England, the reigning queen at the time the county was founded. People outside Prince George's County sometimes call the county PG County, but some residents do not like this.

Washington DC is at the southern end of the BosWash Northeast megalopolis urban corridor, and connected to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the rest of the urban Northeast by road and Amtrak rail (Acela makes the route fast).
